Software

'Core software' is a list of the software that we load onto our children's computers at Homerton. We recommend creating a list of 'core' software so that it limits the programs that the staff and children need to learn about. Any software that isn't part of your 'core' could be made into a software 'library' for drawing on at approprite times with children; for example for a festival or for following an interest.

There is so much software available that it can be overwhelming. We select carefully and only add software to our core list that we review and agree together. We think it is important that children get to know the programs on the computer well so that they are able to choose what they like for themselves and be able to use all the possibilities within each program. It's also important the staff are familiar with the software so that they are able to make links in their planning and support, develop and challenge children's uses.

We update our 'core' software annually.

'Ideas for using core software' is a Word document that indicates possible uses of each piece of software togther with notes about idiosyncratic exit points! 'Using software for art' gives ideas of how to use a good art package, such as 'Revelation Natural Art' or 'Dazzle', creatively. 'Tizzy's First Tools' is a toolkit of software that includes a program called 'Present'. This document shows you how to add your own photos to 'Present'. Children are able to then drag their own photos into the slides and can add text or audio. Great for re-telling events. The sheet on Software and resources is included again here for ease, it's a resource document full of our currently used software and resources with suppliers contact details.
