We download all software onto the hard drives of our computers. The following is how we download Cd's onto our hard drives of Stand Alone computers, if you are on a network you will need to seek administrative help to add Cd's for children's use.
The following instructions are for the more technically minded and will help you download all your CD's to your Hard Drive. Make sure any Cd's you are going to do this with have either not been installed before or have been fully uninstalled through 'uninstall programs' in the control panel.
- Put the CD-Rom in the drive
- If it automatically starts up cancel the installation
- DB click on 'My computer'
- DB click on the 'C' drive
- Right click on a blank space within the 'C' drive window
- A pop up menu appears. Click on 'New' and then 'Folder'
- Name the folder with the software name.
- Open the folder and move it to one side by clicking and dragging on the blue bar at the top of the window
- Db click on 'My computer'
- Click with the right mouse button on the CD-Rom drive
- Click 'Open' on the pop up menu
- Go to Edit and click 'Select All' (you will need to make sure 'show hidden files and folders' is selected in the Tools menu under 'folder options')
- Click and drag the entire selected contents of this folder into the folder you have made in the C Drive
- It will copy across
- Take out the CD-Rom and now use the install button in the new folder, this will install the CD from the hard drive so that when you run the program the computer knows where to look for the contents
- Tips: Do not do this for CD's that carry large amounts of video e.g. some of the BBC software. If you have installed the software before make sure you uninstall it before trying the above
